Ills, Drills, and Pills:  A Look Back at Our Health Professions

August 22 - November 25, 2006

Ills, Drill, and Pills:  A Look Back at Our Health Professions recaptures the medical and pharmaceutical world of the 20th century in west-central Illinois.  Included are office re-creations for dentist Dr. C.D. Eshleman, podiatrist Dr. C.J. Meyer, Jr., and general practitioner Dr. Albert Havens.  Sections containing ophthalmology and optometry, and a pharmacy are also included.  Many of the instruments and tools used in the various professions are also on display.

Dr. Eshleman practiced in Macomb from 1920 until his retirement in the 1970s.  His office re-creation contains his original dental chair, dental unit, instrument cabinet, as well as his office sign.

Dr. Meyer began his practice in 1937 after having graduated from the Illinois College of Chiropody and Foot Surgery in Chicago.  His office re-creation includes his original patient chair along with medical books and equipment.

Dr. Havens practiced medicine in New Philadelphia, IL for over sixty years.   His office re-creation includes his original office door, as well as his patient chair and numerous medical books.

The other displays contain artifacts owned by the museum and many that have been graciously loaned by area professionals and residents.   An interactive room containing hands-on activities for our younger visitors is also part of the exhibit.
